Scott M. Karson appeared as part of a three-judge panel which presided over the Suffolk County finals of the New York State 2009 Statewide High School Mock Trial Tournament. The trial was held on April 1, 2009 at the United States Court House in Central Islip. The trial involved a defamation claim brought by a high school principal who was accused by the defendant of improperly raising a student’s grade, and thereby making that student the class valedictorian, in exchange for campaign contributions from the student’s father for the principal’s bid to be elected to the state assembly. The other judges on the panel were Hon. Jerry Garguilo of the New York State Supreme Court, and Richard Winkler of Winkler, Kurtz, Winkler & Kuhn, LLP of Port Jefferson Station. The winning school was Central Islip High School, which will move on to the regionals against the Nassau County champion.
