Use of Electronic Cigarettes on School Grounds

Use of Electronic Cigarettes on School Grounds

KEEPING YOU INFORMED…

Governor Cuomo recently signed legislation immediately banning the use of electronic cigarettes on all public and private school grounds throughout the State. “School grounds,” for purposes of the ban, includes any building, structure and surrounding outdoor grounds contained within the property of a public or private pre-school, nursery school, or elementary or secondary school. The ban also applies to any school vehicles that are used to transport children or school personnel.

Schools should immediately implement this ban and ensure that employees and students are made aware that the use of electronic cigarettes is prohibited on school grounds.  Any applicable policy manuals or codes of conduct should also be amended.

If you have any questions regarding the ban on the use of electronic cigarettes on school grounds, please contact Matthew J. Mehnert or one of our other attorneys by calling (631) 694-2300.
