Now that the summer is over and it is time to head back to school, we are taking this opportunity to remind you about the current legal requirements for student immunizations for the 2017-2018 school year, as issued by the New York State Department of Health (“DOH”).
Vaccines required for school entry are as per the attached chart issued by the DOH Bureau of Immunization summarizing the dosing requirements for the 2017-2018 school year. The chart is also available at https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/2370.pdf.
The New York State Department of Education also issued, effective July 2017, a revised version of its “Immunization Guidelines for Schools,” which provides guidance with respect to a number of key topics related to student immunizations including, but not limited to:
- Elements of a School Immunization Policy
- Implementation of a School Immunization Program
- Minimum Immunization Requirements for School Attendance
- Communication/Dissemination of Student Immunization Requirements to Parents/Guardians
- Review of Immunization Status for School Attendance
- Partially or Non-Immunized Students
- Homeless Students
- Students with IEPs
- Homeschooled Students
- Refugee Students
- Medical or Religious Exemptions
- Documentation/Recordkeeping
- Immunization Surveys
- Disease Surveillance
- Return to School After Illness

We recommend that you review them to ensure that you have a comprehensive immunization policy and that your immunization program is being properly implemented.
